Want to be part of a high achieving team?
Take a look at what it takes.
What a typical project with Linkan looks like.
1. PROJECT SCOPING
A client has a water quality problem. Their water has heavy metals, high organics, toxicity, etc. that exceed target limits (e.g., discharge standards, internal process usage). Linkan evaluates the water quality and scopes potential treatment solutions while considering client budget, geographical restrictions, and project timeline.
2. BENCH & PILOT TESTING
Linkan performs bench and pilot tests on the water, either in the office or at the site to prove out treatment options determined in the scoping phase. Linkan evaluates a broad range of active and passive treatment technologies, from membrane filtration to biological processes. Linkan also determines critical scale-up design parameters.
3. ENGINEERING DESIGN
Linkan designs the scaled-up version of the selected treatment process. This includes mass balance, equipment selection, pipe and pump sizing, P&ID and construction drawings, and process control narrative.
4. PROCUREMENT
Linkan purchases and ensures timely delivery of equipment to the site. This is particularly challenging due to the remoteness of most mine sites. There are often no roads to our northern Alaska and Canadian sites, requiring use of Hercules C-130 cargo planes or barge deliveries (when the arctic ocean isn’t frozen, of course).
5. CONSTRUCTION
Linkan has a general contractors license and will often build the treatment facility or manage the construction process.
6. COMMISSIONING
Linkan gets the treatment plant up and running and optimizes performance before “handing the keys” to the client. In some cases, Linkan will continue to operate the plant.
7. OPERATIONS
Linkan will manage site operations and/or provide operations training to the client.
YOU WILL
Spend your first phase of employment (approx. 6 months to a year, depending on the season) at Linkan exclusively onsite at Linkan’s treatment facilities to gain valuable operating experience and serve as the critical link between our operations group and process design teams in Elko and Golden. After the first phase of employment, you and Linkan will discuss your career goals to determine further placement, which could be remaining in a field-based position or transitioning to an office-based role.
When transitioning to an office role, be converted to a more typical 40 hour a week role.
-
Working in the field on a two weeks on, two weeks off, schedule for the first phase of employment as a shift operator. During your weeks on, you will work seven days a week for up to 12 hours per day.
-
Working at a Linkan office for short durations performing pilot or bench testing or helping with field mobilizations and support.
-
Working in remote locations. You might be in Alaska 100+ miles from the nearest village, in northern Canada over the ice haul road, Napa County California, or South Carolina. Your work location is determined based on where you’re needed at that time.
-
Occasionally expecting to work extra hours. This is not frequent, but, in this industry, situations sometimes arise that require immediate support. You may be snowed in on a mountaintop near Jackpot, Nevada or north of the Artic Circle when process breakdowns occur that require timely, creative solutions.
-
Being left alone on your days off. Our goal is to develop you, not burn you out. Your two weeks off are critical to resting and recharging. We welcome you utilizing that off time for professional growth, on your terms.
EXAMPLE ASSIGNMENTS
-
Act as standalone operator at a 1,000 gpm reverse osmosis water treatment plant
-
Implement WAD cyanide bench test on pilot scale at guidance of Linkan process chemist
-
Build kinetic cell tests in a remote location
-
Hike up a mountain to collect water and rock samples
YOU MUST
Primarily, we’re looking for a candidate that is passionate about improving water quality. This is mandatory for the prospective applicant. Linkan employees arrived through vastly different journeys, but guide and comingle our journeys toward a passion for water treatment innovation, advancement, and achievement.
YOU SHOULD
An engineering background is preferred but not required: our engineering manager was a master mechanic for 22 years prior to getting his engineering degree! Most of our staff are civil, chemical, or environmental engineers.
-
Love working outdoors. This includes negative 50-degree weather in Alaska in January. Don’t worry, we’ll provide adequate PPE and warm coffee, you just need to bring a positive attitude.
-
Prefer the mountains to the flatlands. As we work at active and abandoned mine sites, our work is generally in the mountains. The Delong Mountains (Northern Alaska), Canadian Rockies, and the Nevada alpine are examples of our project locations.
-
Although the work is primarily remote, we ask that candidates be located, or willing to relocate to Elko, NV or Golden, CO.
BENEFITS
-
The starting salary for this role is $75,000 (US)
-
There is no overtime pay; the end of year bonus will capture extra effort outside of your expected working hours
-
Profit sharing included in an Employee Stock Ownership Program (ESOP)
-
401k with 4% match; no vesting period
